Leeds to host new CRUK Centre

Professor Tim Bishop will lead a new Cancer Research UK (CRUK)-funded Centre based at the University of Leeds.  The Centre is a new partnership between the University of Leeds, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) and CRUK which will provide a framework to strengthen existing work in defined areas of cancer research as well as foster links between scientists and clinicians within the partner organisations.  The research areas where the new centre will concentrate are Genetics and Epigenetics, Biomarkers and Molecular Pathology, Targeted Therapies and Early phase/prospective phase Clinical Trials; all of these areas are currently areas of expertise within LIMM but the support of the CRUK centre will ensure these areas can be developed even further.
As well as supporting ongoing research the centre will bring 6 new Clinical Research Fellow posts and 3 new PhD studentships to the University over the next 3 years to bolster research teams and increase output. Further, the centre will also provide support staff to run the Centre Genomics Facility based in the Clinical Sciences Building which will continue to provide a state of the art genomics service to researchers across the University and the NHS Trust.
Professor Bishop will act as Chair for the Centre but he is supported by Professor Terry Rabbitts, Professor, Peter Selby (LIMM), Steve Smye (LTHT and University of Leeds), Professor Peter McWilliam (Dean of Faculty of Medicine and Health) and Jacquie Myers (LTHT).
