About LIMM

The Leeds Institute of Molecular Medicine (LIMM) is an institute within the School of Medicine and Faculty of Medicine and Health, dedicated to basic, translational, clinical and health research integrated with student education. LIMM has 87 members of academic staff who generated more than £22 million in grant income in 2010-11. The other Institutes within the School are listed below and provide a strong research framework with extensive opportunities for collaboration.

  • Leeds Institute of Genetics, Health and Therapeutics (LIGHT) – Professor Mark Gilthorpe
  • Leeds Institute of Health Sciences (LIHS) – Professor Allan House
  • Leeds Institute of Medical Education (LIME) – Professor Trudie Roberts  The Wellcome Trust Brenner Building

LIMM (Professor Peter Selby) is a multidisciplinary institute.  Experimental medicine and technology evaluation are major interests. (See http://limm.leeds.ac.uk).

The Institute currently comprises four Divisions:

  • Cancer Studies and Pathology
  • Clinical Sciences (including Genetics and Neuroscience)
  • Clinical Trials Research
  • Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Diseases

LIMM contributes to medical and scientific education, principally within the Leeds School of Medicine MBChB course, and is developing more extensive taught undergraduate and postgraduate educational opportunities.

LIMM is based on several sites. Opened in 2005 on the St James’s University Hospital campus, the Wellcome Trust Brenner Building added to the existing facilities housed in the Clinical Sciences Building, Cancer Research Building, Cancer Genetics Building and Robert Ogden Building.  This complex is linked to the clinical trials and psychosocial research  activities in the recently opened state of the art St James’s Institute for Oncology in Bexley Wing and other major clinical activities in multiple disciplines within St James’s University Hospital.  There is a substantial scientific and clinical research community on this site in Clinical Sciences including genetics, gastroenterology, microbiology, surgery and anaesthetics, pathology, oncology and haematology. Complementing this, musculoskeletal research which includes an NIHR Musculoskeletal Biomedical Research Unit, is based at Chapel Allerton Hospital, a specialised hospital campus for this purpose. The main University campus provides a base for the UK-CRC registered and NCRI Accredited Clinical Trials Research Unit which forms another major component of LIMM.
