Dr Ornella Belvedere, a medical oncologist, currently a Clinical Research Fellow in the Pre-cancer Genomics Group in the Section of Experimental Therapeutics, has been awarded a European Union Marie Curies Actions Intra-European Fellowship. Ornella and colleagues will be conducting a two year research programme examining somatic genetic changes in the early (pre-invasive) stage of lung and upper aero-digestive tract tumours and hope to find genomic abnormalities that can be developed as biomarkers that can be detected in the blood, sputum or saliva of patients, enabling earlier diagnosis of the disease.
